Grenada Economy - 1989 http://www.theodora.com/wfb1989/grenada/grenada_economy.html SOURCE: 1989 CIA WORLD FACTBOOK Overview: The economy is essentially agricultural and centers on the traditional production of spices and tropical plants. Agriculture accounts for about 20% of GDP and 90% of exports and employs 25% of the labor force. Tourism is the leading foreign exchange earner, followed by agricultural exports. Manufacturing remains relatively undeveloped, but with a more favorable private investment climate since 1983, is expected to grow. Despite an impressive average annual growth rate for the economy of 5.5% during the period 1984-87, unemployment remains high at about 20%. GDP: $118.7 million, per capita $1,400; real growth rate 6% (1987 est.) Inflation rate (consumer prices): - 0.9% (1987) Unemployment rate: 20% (1987 est.)
