Malta Economy - 1989 http://www.theodora.com/wfb1989/malta/malta_economy.html SOURCE: 1989 CIA WORLD FACTBOOK Overview: Significant resources are limestone, a favorable geographic location, and a productive labor force. Malta produces only about 20% of its food needs, has limited freshwater supplies, and has no domestic energy sources. Consequently, the economy is highly dependent on foreign trade and services. Manufacturing and tourism are the largest contributors to the economy. Manufacturing accounts for about 30% of GDP, with the textile and clothing industry a major contributor. In 1987 inflation was held to a modest 0.4% rate and unemployment dropped to 4.4%. Per capita GDP at $4,310 places Malta in the middle-income range of the world's nations.
