A cruise ship docked at Ilulissat harbor.

Ilulissat means "iceberg" in Greenlandic, so named because it is typically surrounded by hundreds of icebergs.

It is the hub of the west coast Disko Bay region and Greenland's third largest town, with a population of roughly 4,500 people and at least as many sled dogs. Being located 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it is ideally located for proximity to massive icebergs and the polar icecap. Consequently, it has become a tourism hub, with a variety of hotel accommodations and several tour operators.
